David Brown Defence, based in Huddersfield, United Kingdom, has secured significant investment from its parent group, David Brown Santasalo. This investment recognises the vital role DB Defence plays in supporting critical defence systems of national importance to the UK and its allies. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
The multi-million-pound investment represents a significant boost for one of the UK’s oldest and most specialised engineering businesses. It is set to create 100 new jobs in Huddersfield in 2024/25 at the Company’s state-of-the-art design and manufacturing facility. This funding will ensure the timely completion of vital contracts and support the delivery of future schedules for years to come. The gear systems for these highly complex military platforms require years of engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and testing. The investment will bolster DB Defence’s ability to meet these demanding requirements.
DB Defence has been integral to the development of bespoke land and marine gear systems for the defence industry for more than a century. It is the original designer and manufacturer of gear systems for military vehicles such as the Challenger 2, Titan, Trojan, and CVR(T), as well as power transmission systems for maritime vessels, including the Type 26 Global Combat Ship. This sophisticated and complex manufacturing capability is vital to the UK’s defence infrastructure.
In addition to bolstering national security, continued investment in the defence industry significantly contributes to the British economy. DB Defence currently employs 382 people at its Park Works facility in Huddersfield, which has been a notable regional employer since the David Brown business first opened its doors in 1860.
Mike Helme, Managing Director for DB Defence, said: “The investment comes at a time when defence is crucial to our national security. The capital will continue to strengthen our capabilities at the Park Works manufacturing facility to enable us to deliver on our land and marine programmes both now and into the future.”
