Manufacturers could be in line for energy mis-selling windfall

Manufacturers are at risk of paying higher than necessary energy bills due to prolific mis-selling from energy brokers, according to an energy market expert.

To date, Business Energy Claims has identified claims totalling in the tens of millions of pounds across many different sectors , including manufacturing where firms have claimed several hundred thousand pounds.

Managing Director Callum Thompson said: “Manufacturing has been hit by the steep rise in wholesale energy prices, making it even more important that companies not only get the most competitive deal, but that they are not paying hidden commission fees.

Most brokers receive their commission directly from the supplier and it is built into the unit price they arrange. Often, this is not disclosed to the customer meaning the unit price is higher.

“There are more than 2,000 brokers selling energy to businesses and the market is unregulated. While Ofgem has plans to address this, in the meantime there are still very many manufacturing businesses which have fallen victim and could be in line for a financial windfall.”
