First female chairman for region’s civil engineers

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in the North East has elected Sarah Kellerman as its Region Chairman for the North East, the first time a woman has held the role.

A chartered civil engineer and chartered surveyor with almost three decades of experience, Sarah is a director at international consultancy Arcadis in Newcastle. A resident of Teesside, her professional experience covers areas as diverse as power generation, water, rail, highways infrastructure, utilities, building and civil engineering, public works, nuclear, oil and gas, petro-chemical, renewable energy, and ship building and refurbishment.

In addition to Sarah’s election, Laura Chatwin has been elected Chair of the ICE’s North East Graduates and Students Committee, which represents young civil engineers in the region. Laura works as a Civil Structural Engineer at Arup, having graduated from Newcastle University with a master’s degree in Civil and Structural Engineering.

More than 2,000 of the ICE’s 86,000 members are based in the North East, from professionals at the beginning of their careers, such as apprentices and university students, to industry leading experts and respected academics. The organisation works to support civil engineers and promote civil engineering as a profession.

Sarah Kellerman said: “It is an honour to be elected Regional Chairman of ICE in the North East. I have benefited from the support of my fellow ICE members throughout my career and want to afford that opportunity to others. As an organisation we will continue to provide professional development and help our members strive for excellence, while reaching out into our schools and universities to inspire the next generation of engineers. I am particularly keen to get more women into civil engineering.”

Laura Chatwin said: “ICE provides invaluable support for young engineers, which ensures that when students graduate and enter the workforce they are ready to make a productive contribution from day one. I’m proud to be part of an organisation that makes an investment in young people by providing them with the expertise to drive forward infrastructure and engineering.”
