Fantastic surprise for bridge selfie competition winner

Fantastic surprise for bridge selfie competition winner

28/08/19

In June 2019, the Institution of Civil Engineers, ICE, encouraged selfie enthusiasts of the North East to take their snaps with the magnificent bridges of the region during this summer’s Explore Engineering weekend.

The Matthews family, Pamela, David, Faith and Libby (the dog) snapped a delightful selfie in front of the Hagg Bank Bridge at Wylam, Northumberland and were announced as the lucky winners of £150.

A delighted Pamela Matthews said: “What a fantastic surprise!

“We had a laugh taking lots of selfies with the dog and I had a great excuse, at last, to read the interpretative board too.”

Penny Marshall, Regional Director of ICE North East, said: “The Matthews family sent an engaging and fun picture in front of the Hagg Bank Bridge and were deserving winners of the £150 prize.”

The Hagg Bank Bridge (also known as the Points Bridge and the Wylam Railway Bridge) is claimed to be one of the earliest ‘rib-arch’ bridges in the world to carry railway. Built in 1876 by W.G. Laws, it’s claimed the bridge paved the way for new developments in bridge building.

Penny Marshall said, “The photo competitions are a great way to explore the way civil engineering shapes the world around us and budding photographers can still take part in the ‘What is Civil Engineering” photo competition.

The competition is part of #EngineeringSummer, designed to showcase civil engineering projects that make a difference to communities around the world.

Penny continued: “It could be a bridge that you cross every day, a new concert hall that’s transformed the area you live in, or simply a road that’s been designed to relieve congestion in your town.

“If it’s had a positive effect on you, or is simply stunning to look at, we want to see it!”

There are two categories, each with a different prize. 16 years and under can win a trip to the Water Engineering Exhibition at ICE HQ in London. 17 years and over can win a £100 Amazon voucher.
