Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd has been selected by the judges as a finalist in three categories of the 2018 Construction News Specialists Awards, the only national awards that recognises the best specialist contractors from across the UK.
The Darlington-based company has been shortlisted for the Project of the Year by a Specialist Contractor (subcontract over £6m) for its work on London Bridge Station.
In addition, Cleveland Bridge is a finalist in the Project of the Year (subcontract between £2m and £4m) for the delivery of a new railway bridge in South Wales.
Completing the trio is 21-year-old Liam Simpson who has been named as a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category.
The projects named in the Project of the Year categories highlight the range of applications for Cleveland Bridge’s expertise and experience.
The company delivered the London Bridge Station contract for Costain on behalf of Network Rail to supply steelwork for rail decks and concourse bridge decks.
As the fourth busiest station in the city, serving almost 54 million each year, the rail-hub remained open throughout the redevelopment, which is part of the Thameslink Programme.
This presented the logistical challenge in ensuring installation works could be completed efficiently and as part of a strict timetable. To reduce disruption for busy commuters, the project was split into nine phases allowing London Bridge Station to remain open, and the firm also completed a trial construction at its Darlington facility.
Also delivered for Network Rail was the fabrication and installation of the bridge in Newport. Part of a significant overhead line electrification (OLE) programme, the 228-tonne, 50m skewed, weathering-grade steel road bridge crosses the Great Western Main Line in South Wales.
Required to accommodate the increased height required for new OLE systems, the geometrically-challenging structure was fabricated at Cleveland Bridge’s facility, and following a complete trial assembly, the steelwork was loaded onto trailers and transported to Newport, where it was assembled prior to installation in a trackside temporary works compound.
Chris Droogan, managing director of Cleveland Bridge UK, said: “We’re delighted to have reached the final for two of our flagship projects – this high-level recognition is testament to the hard work and dedication of our workforce. Both projects presented logistical challenges, but the skill and experience of our team helped to deliver them on time and to specification.
“I’m doubly delighted that Liam has once again shone as a star apprentice at a national level. Our apprentices and apprenticeship scheme continues to be recognised nationally and regionally for its excellent results”.
Construction News Editor Tom Fitzpatrick said: “Specialists are continuing to up their game in difficult economic circumstances. Our expert judges have now shortlisted the companies who represent the best of the people, initiatives and projects in the construction industry supply chain.”
